Energy Efficient Coolers
We have 2.1 million vending machines, beverage dispensers, and coolers that deliver chilled beverages to consumers that are operated by our customers. In 2009 we reduced the CO2e emissions of our sales and marketing equipment by 170,000 metric tons.
To help conserve energy in our sales and marketing equipment, we have been installing energy management devices, which activate lights and adjust cooling power based on usage signals. We are also working with suppliers to expand our use of Low-Energy LED lighting, which generates less heat and reduces energy consumption. We have already eliminated hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) from the insulation in our equipment, and we are working to eliminate them from our equipment completely. We are piloting alternative refrigerate gases, such as CO2, which has less of an environmental impact than HFCs, and in Europe, we are testing hydro-carbon-based refrigerations.
In 2010, we introduced 35 new HFC-free vending machines for the Capitol buildings in Washington, DC.
